Kim Dotcom is certainly a colorful character but you have to admit that he does things for real. Two years after the raid that shut down his file hosting and streaming sites MegaUpload and MegaVideo, he has opened Baboom, a service dedicated to music streaming and download. At the moment the site is almost empty, just a demonstration of its potential with the music album “Good Times” by Kim Dotcom himself.
A year ago, Kim Dotcom launched Mega, the ideal successor to MegaUpload, but apparently it wasn’t enough for him. In September 2013, he announced that he was leaving Mega to open a new music service and also a political party in New Zealand. The temporary name for the new service was Megabox but apparently he preferred to leave the prefix “mega” and opted for Baboom.
In the meantime, Kim Dotcom also recorded a music album, “Good Times”, also available on various online stores such as iTunes and Amazon for various prices. On Baboom you can listen to the various tracks of the album in streaming or download them for free choosing between the MP3, FLAC or WAV file formats.
Today Kim Dotcom celebrated his 40th birthday also announcing that in a few hours half a million people have listened to his album. His Twitter account is integrated into Baboom so you can follow his tweets directly from the new service. Dotcom has also posted a tweet that explains how to receive a beta invite to Baboom.
While Kim Dotcom’s album is available for fee, it’s expected that Baboom will also includes pay contents. There will be a service similar to iTunes and other digital music sellers but there will also be banner ads to accompany free music streaming.
Kim Dotcom stated from the beginning that he intends to revolutionize the music industry. Considering the curiosity around him, also for the international intrigue that followed the raid against MegaUpload and MegaVideo, it’s no surprise that a lot of people went to snoop on Baboom and to listen to his music. When the new service will offer pay music we’ll see if Dotcom will be able to obtain a real success.
