Yesterday the British actress Kate O’Mara passed away after a short illness. She was in a nursing home in Sussex.

Frances M Carroll, this was her birth name, was born August 10, 1939, in Leicester, Leicestershire. She studied at art school before becoming an actress like her mother Hazel Bainbridge.

Kate O’Mara had her first acting experience in 1963 on stage, in a production of “The Merchant of Venice”. After a few years, she started appearing in television productions, some of which were famous such as “Danger Man”, “Adam Adamant Lives!”, “The Saint”, “The Avengers” and “Z Cars”. Since the late ’60s, she also appeared in a few movies, including the Hammer Studio productions “The Vampire Lovers” and “The Horror of Frankenstein”).

In the early ’80s, Kate O’Mara played an important role in the soap opera “Triangle”. In 1985, she played for the first time the outlaw Time Lords known as the Rani in the adventure “The Mark of the Rani” of the famous TV show “Doctor Who”. In 1986, the other role for which she was particularly famous, Caress Morrell in the American soap opera “Dynasty”. In 1987, she returned to the UK, where she played again the Rani in the “Doctor Who” adventure “Time and the Rani” and had another role as a villain in the British soap opera “Howards’ Way”.

In the ’90s, Kate O’Mara had many other roles in various TV productions including the special “Doctor Who: Dimensions in Time” and especially in the stage productions of the company she founded. Over the years she also worked in audio/radio productions and in 2000 there was her last performance as the Rani in the audio adventure “The Rani Reaps the Whirlwind”.

In the course of her life, Kate O’Mara was also a writer, publishing the novels “When She Was Bad” and “Good Time Girl” and the two autobiographical books “Vamp Until Ready” and “Game Plan: A Woman’s Survival Kit”.

In the course of her life, Kate O’Mara has been married three times and had a son. On the occasion of the 50th “Doctor Who” anniversary she expressed the wish to return to the show. Unfortunately, she couldn’t do it.
