In recent days, they held the annual shareholders meeting of Tesla Motors, the electric car manufacturer founded in 2003 by Elon Musk (photo ©Dan Taylor / Heisenberg Media) along with some other entrepreneurs. Musk, who is also the CEO, stated that he intends to keep that positions for another 4 or 5 years. His idea is to manage the production of the next generation of electric cars.

Tesla Motors has been listed on the NASDAQ since 2010, when it made its IPO to be in the American Stock Exchange. The company’s shares had ups and downs and last year lost more than 20% of their value after a few problems with the new Model S. However, the company is growing and also in the stock market the shares to be generally good.

Tesla Motors specializes in electric cars so it operates in a market that is still a niche market but is growing. The company is looking to expand its business by exporting its cars to other countries and this makes Elon Musk’s tougher. At the shareholders’ meeting he also spoke of the difficulties of being CEO of two companies, in his case SpaceX as well.

Elon Musk’s work is divided between the management of rocket launches, including those of the Dragon spacecraft to the International Space Station, and the development of electric cars and the expansion of their sales. In short, those aren’t exactly ordinary operations of a company, much less two of them.

Both in Tesla Motors and SpaceX, Elon Musk has competent collaborators who help him but he makes the final decisions. For this reason, initially it wasn’t in his plans to be the CEO of both companies and sooner or later someone else will replace him in at least one of them.

For the moment, however, Elon Musk has to choose where to produce batteries that will power the new Tesla Motors third generation car. He’s considering various USA states in which the company could build a “gigafactory” and probably the final decision will be taken by the end of the year.

Elon Musk keeps on being engaged in innovative projects that require a lot of attention and energy to their development. Given the results, as long as he can follow there will be exciting news.
