Kim Clijsters (picture ©Edwin Martinez) won the WTA Championship defeating Caroline Wozniacki in the final. For the Belgian it’s the third victory after the 2002 and 2003 ones, her first after she came back to tennis.

Clijsters didn’t dominate the tournament: in the round robin she lost to Zvonareva in two sets but when it mattered the most she succeded in doing better than her opponents. At the start of the tournament there were some doubts about her because she hand’t played since the U.S. Open but in the end her skills and experience mattered.

The final started well for Kim Clijsters, who won the first set breaking Wozniacki’s serve three times being broken only once. In the second set the Belgian succeded in going ahead for a 4-1 lead but Wozniacki became more aggressive even coming to the net to take the points and succeded in turning the set upside down and win it 7-5.

Caroline Wozniacki started the third set well breaking Clijsters’ serve in the first game but the Belgian didn’t panic: first she broke Wozniacki back in the next game and after a few games she broke the Danish again for a 4-2 lead.

Wozniacki tried to stay into the match in every way and in the last game she even had two break points but Kim Clijsters succeded in cancelling them and won the final set 6-3 conquering the tournament.

Kim Clijsters ended in the best way an year in which she confirmed her U.S. Open title. In the WTA ranking she’s going to be number 3 but probably she’s not very interested: the Belgian came back to tennis to win the important tournaments, particularly the Grand Slams, but she also wants to dedicate time to her family though for this occasion her husband and her daughter stayed at home.

Concerning Caroline Wozniacki there are still doubts about her leadership in the world ranking but it’s true that she never gave up when she was one step from the defeat in the second set and anyway she reached the final so her tournament can’t be considered negative. Certainly the beautiful Danish still has to go some steps up to convince everybody that she’s the best but at that level it’s quite hard to make more than one step at the time so let’s wait and see if she’ll keep on improving in the next season.

Yes, because 2010 season is over and now there will be a two months break then at the beginning of 2011 a new season will start and we hope to see all the best players healthy and ready to battle to see who’s the best.
