Novak Djokovic reached the final defeating Paolo Lorenzi, Rogerio Dutra Silva, Julien Benneteau, Stanislas Wawrinka, Juan Martin Del Potro and David Ferrer. So far he has lost only one set to Ferrer. He’s the defending champion and is in his fourth final, the third streight, at the U.S. Open.
Andy Murray starts well breaking Novak Djokovic but he loses his service in the next game. Initially, the Scot seems to be the player who best adapts to the wind and has four break points in the third game but the Serb wins his service game. Murray breaks his opponent again in the fifth game but loses his service in the eighth game. Djokovic becomes more aggressive and that way plays better with the wind so the set became balanced and it’s almost inevitable that it’s decided by a tie-break in which no one seems to be able to take a lead. After about 24 minutes of tie-break, Murray wins it 12-10.
In the second set, Novak Djokovic suffers from the loss and that’s how Andy Murray breaks him in the second and fourth game but gets distracted and loses his service in the fifth game. The wind isn’t so strong anymore and the Serb gets back in the match breaking the Scot again in in the ninth game. However, Murray manages to break Djokovic again in the twelfth game to win the set 7-5.
In the third set, Andy Murray has the chance to take a lead with two break points in the first game but Novak Djokovic wins his service game. The Serb doesn’t give and it’s him who breaks the Scot in the third game then he saves two more break points in the sixth game and breaks Murray again in the seventh game. Djokovic wins the set 6-2 showing that he’ss still convinced he can win the match.
In the fourth set, Novak Djokovic starts well breaking Andy Murray in the first game. The Serb has another break point in the third game but the Scot wins his service game and in the fourth game it’s him who has a break point to go 2-2 but Djokovic wins his service game. In the ninth game, the Serb breaks his opponent again and wins the set 6-3.
In the fifth set, everything looks set for another victory for Novak Djokovic, also because Andy Murray showed one of his typical negative attitudes when things are going wrong. Instead, it’s the Scot who breaks the Serb in the first and third game. As in the second set, however, Murray immediately loses his service, in this case in the fourth game. However, Djokovic is very tired and loses his service again in the seventh game. In the eighth game, Murray serves for the tournament, wins the set 6-2 and after nearly five hours of fighting conquers his first Grand Slam title.

It was the fifth consecutive U.S. Open men’s final played on Monday. News arrived that the super Saturday will be abolished, it remains to be seen how they’ll change the schedule of the men’s tournament.
This final wasn’t always technically great because in the first two hours the wind disturbed the players a lot. Andy Murray almost won it, almost lost it and eventually won it after a battle that was only a minute shorter than the longest final in the history of the U.S. Open.
Novak Djokovic is inevitably disappointed because this summer he lost the Wimbledon and the U.S. Open titles and won no medals at the Olympics. It was impossible to repeat his incredible 2011 but he’ll definitely try to win the ATP Finals and the next year he’ll try to win more Grand Slam titles.
At his fifth final, Andy Murray finally won his first Grand Slam title, just like his coach Ivan Lendl. Winning the Olympic title was definitely important and now it will probably be easier for him to win more major titles, though of course his opponents are ready for more battles.
