
Justine Henin (picture ©Bill Mitchell) has announced her retirement from professional activity because of persistent problems with the elbow she injured last year at Wimbledon.
Justine Henin was born on June 1, 1982 in Liege, Belgium. Her tennis career began at a high level in 1997, when she won the Roland Garros junior tournament. In 1999 she made his debut at professional level winning the tournament in Antwerp.
Justine Henin’s had a career at the highest level winning 43 WTA titles. In 2003 she reached the first place in the world ranking. In the same year she won the title at Roland Garros and Flushing Meadows. In 2004 she won the Australian Open and in the same year she also won the gold medal at the Athens Olympic Games.
Paris was certainly the city that gave Justine Henin the greatest satisfaction as she won three titles at Roland Garros in 2005, 2006 and 2007.
In 2007 Justine Henin also won her last Grand Slam title at Flushing Meadows.
In 2007 unfortunately Justine Henin started having personal problems with her divorce from her husband and a serious accident to one of her brothers.
In 2008 Justine Henin regularly started the season but just when Roland Garros was about to begin, where she had won the last three editions, she surprisingly announced her retirement from active competition.
On September 22, 2009 Justine Henin announced she would return to play in 2010. At Wimbledon 2010 she injured in her fourth round round match and medical tests revealed an injury to a ligament in her elbow that forced her to close the season.
In 2011, Justine Henin was back but at the Australian Open she lost at the third round. New medical tests showed damage to her already injured elbow therefore she has announced the painful decision to retire permanently.

Beyond the numbers Justine Henin was a player with an extraordinary talent, with some of the most stylistically beautiful shots in tennis history, perhaps the best seen in recent years, regardless of the players gender.
Unfortunately Justine Henin was unlucky in the game and in love, let’s hope that in future things for her will be better!
