Rajeev Suri has been named president and CEO of Nokia, a position he’ll hold from May 1, 2014. Suri will have the task of revitalizing the company after the sale of Nokia’s Devices & Services, the mobile devices division, to Microsoft in September 2013. His predecessor Stephen Elop went back to Microsoft, with which he had worked previously. Risto Siilasmaa, who at that point was appointed Nokia’s interim CEO, has become chairman of the company’s board of directors.

Born on October 10, 1967 in India, Rajeev Suri studied electronic and telecommunications engineering at the Manipal Institute of Technology. After some work experience in various companies from different countries, in 1995 he joined the Nokia Group, where he had various jobs, some very important.

Since October 2009, Rajeev Suri has been CEO of NSN (Nokia Solutions and Networks), a joint venture between Nokia and Siemens which is now fully owned by Nokia. During these years, Suri radically transformed NSN bringing it among the leaders in the telecommunications industry.

After the sale of mobile devices, Nokia will concentrate its efforts on other technologies related to connectivity. For HERE, the Nokia unit that deals with maps, Michael Halbeherr was appointed CEO. There will be new investments in products and services for network operators and for those related to other mobile technologies.

Nokia’s economic situation clearly improved after the deal with Microsoft. The first quarter of 2014 showed a net gain of 108 million Euros, while the same period last year recorded losses for 90 million Euros. Now, however, the company needs to look to the future programming it well, meaning in a way very different compared to what was done with mobile phones, where Nokia had the leadership but was unable to maintain it.

Rajeev Suri perfectly knows Nokia so he has the experience and the skills needed to work well as CEO. It might not be enough but that’s already a good thing for a new beginning for the company.
