Samantha Stosur (photo ©Dmadeo) reached the final defeating Sofia Arvidsson, Coco Vandeweghe, Nadia Petrova, Maria Kirilenko, Vera Zvonareva and Angelique Kerber. She lost three sets: in the third round vs. Petrova, in the fourth round vs. Kirilenko and in the semifinal vs. Kerber. She’s at her second final in a Grand Slam tournament after Roland Garros 2010.
Serena Williams reached the final defeating Bojana Jovanovski, Michaella Krajicek, Victoria Azarenka, Ana Ivanovic, Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova and Caroline Wozniacki. Sho lost no sets. After returning to the activity, she slowly got back into shape and in this tournament she proved she could defeat pretty easily some of the players considered among the favorites for the title. In particular, against the No. 1 of WTA ranking Wozniacki she was clearly motivated to show who really is the best in the world.
We all expected Serena Williams’s victory, but the exact opposite happened. The American wasn’t very precise while Samantha Stosur played a match close to perfection. From the beginning it was clear that the Australian was ready to exploit all her chances playing with great concentration. When she won the first set 6-2, everybody saw that there was the possibility of a big surprise but we also expected a reaction from Serena Williams.
Instead, the second set started again with Samantha Stosur breaking her opponent’s serve but on a strange situation: on the break point Serena Williams screamed immediately after hitting the ball and the chair umpire gave the point to the Australian considering it a disturbed point, according to the rules. The American was furious but she channeled her anger into the game and had her finest moment breaking her opponent’s serve for the first time. Samantha Stosur kept focused, started playing very well again and won the second set 6-3 conquering the match and her first Grand Slam title.

It was a strange tournament, in which several high-level players went out in the early rounds. An easy win for Serena Williams would’ve convinced the critics of women’s tennis about its low value even more, the fact remains that there isn’t a dominating champion but a group of players who can win even Grand Slam tournaments. In fact this year three Grand Slam tournaments have been won by a player at her first great triumph.
Surely there will still be criticism to women’s tennis, meanwhile Samantha Stosur enjoys her surprising but deservedly won title.
