The physicist Peter Higgs in 2009

A seminar was held at CERN to announce the preliminary results of research in 2011 on the Higgs boson. Two experiments at CERN investigated the Higgs boson, CMS (Compact Muon Solenoid) and ATLAS (A Toroidal LHC Apparatus). During the seminar, the preliminary results of those two experiments were presented separately.

Official portrait of Albert Einstein after receiving the Nobel Prize for Physics in 1921

The Hebrew University of Jerusalem has announced it has started a project that will put online more than eighty thousand documents relating to Albert Einstein on the already existing website Einstein Archives Online dedicated to the famous scientist.

The ICARUS experiment uses its own neutrino detector composed by six hundred tons of liquid argon and for this reason it’s been called T600. That technology was proposed in 1977 by Professor Carlo Rubbia, who won the 1984 Nobel Prize in physics for his other research. Today Rubbia is the spokeperson for the ICARUS experiment. Professor Carlo Rubbia said that ICARUS experiment results are in agreement with our scientific knowledge and neutrinos didn’t travel faster than light.

The team at IBM Research made very important progress in reducing the error in elementary computations and in maintaining the integrity of the quantum properties of qubits. A key element in the production of superconducting qubit was to use manufacturing techniques developed for the production with silicon currently in use.

Yesterday a rumor came out about the possible problems for the instruments used in the Opera experiment and in a few hours they spread around the world just like the result of last September. This morning, CERN issued a press release confirming that an investigation is underway to check if some instruments malfunctioned.
