The Euroleague 2010/2011 is starting

Next week the Euroleague 2010/2011 starts with the first regular season game played on Monday as it’s become traditional, then the other games will be played on Wednesday and Thursday.

Technically the Euroleague started last month with the qualifying rounds but obviously they raise less intererest because the best teams don’t play them even if many teams are involved.

The format is the one created through the last years and it starts with the regular season, a round-robin with 24 teams divided in 4 groups each playing 10 games. The best 4 teams of each group advance to the Top 16, a second round-robin where the best 16 teams are divided in 4 groups of 4 teams each and each team plays 6 games. The best 2 teams of each group advance to the quarter-finals which are played in best of 5 games series. The winners will play the Final Four.

Let’s see which teams are taking part to the regular season with some prdictions.

Group A

Caja Laboral
Maccabi Electra
Partizan mt:s
Asseco Prokom
Zalgiris Kaunas
BC Khimki

The group is balanced, so much that I see Khimki advancing to the next round instead of Partizan or Zalgiris Kaunas. I think that the favourite teams to advance to the Top 16 are: Caja Laboral, Maccabi Electra, Asseco Prokom and BC Khimki.

Group B

Olympiacos Piraeus
Real Madrid
Unicaja
Virtus Roma
Brose Baskets
Spirou Basket

In this group the values between the teams seem outlined with great differences between the strongest and the weakest teams. I think that the favourite teams to advance to the Top 16 are: Olympiacos Piraeus, Real Madrid, Unicaja e Virtus Roma.

Group C

Regal FC Barcelona
Montepaschi Siena
Lietuvos Rytas
Fenerbahce Ulker
KK Cibona Zagreb
Cholet Basket

In this group Barcelona seems superior to the other teams, which will have to struggle in every game to advance to the next round. I think that the favourite teams to advance to the Top 16 are: Regal FC Barcelona, Montepaschi Siena, Fenerbahce Ulker e KK Cibona Zagreb.

Group D

CSKA Moscow
Panathinaikos Athens
Power Elec. Valencia
Efes Pilsen Istanbul
Armani Jeans Milano
Union Olimpija

This group is very strong and balanced so all the teams will have to give their best to advance to the next round. I think that the favourite teams to advance to the Top 16 are: CSKA Moscow, Panathinaikos Athens, Power Elec. Valencia e Armani Jeans Milano.

As always may the best win! 🙂
