Ex basketball player Mike Mitchell passed away after a long illness.
Michael Anthony Mitchell was born on January 1, 1956 in Atlanta, Georgia.
Mike Mitchell played at the University of Auburn and in 1978 and was picked by the Cleveland Cavaliers in the NBA draft of that year, playing three seasons with them. In 1981 he moved to the San Antonio Spurs and played with them until 1988. In the 1984-1985 season Mitchell was the team leading scorer, ahead even of George Gervin.
Mike Mitchell is very famous in Italy, where he played for over a decade with a break in the season 1991-1992, where he played with Maccabi Tel Aviv winning the Israeli championship.
Mike Mitchell returned to Italy and found his second home in Reggio Emilia, where he played until 1999. In the last season he was the top scorer in the Italian championship when he was well over 40 years old.
During the early years of his career Mike Mitchell had a drug problem but had fully come out of that. After his retirement he went back to the U.S.A. to help young drug addicts to rehabilitate.
In early 2009 Mike Mitchell discovered he was ill. Later news about him had become more scarce, spread thanks to his friends. A few months ago notice came that Mitchell had only a few months of life left and now the tragic confirmation of his death arrived.
Mike Mitchell has been an outstanding small forward of 6’7″ in height. He could score lots of points while maintaining good percentages despite the fact that obviously his opponents were trying to defend with attention on him.
In addition to basketball we must also remember the man: Mike Mitchell made mistakes, learned from them and for this reason he became a better man who spent the last years of his too short life helping others.
