Novak Djokovic (photo ©Spekoek) started winning again after his unbeaten record in 2011 was snapped when he lost to Roger Federer at Roland Garros. Last year he reached the semifinals at Wimbledon so reaching the final is already an improvement and from Monday that will take him to the first place in the ATP rankings. He reached the final defeating Jeremy Chardy, Kevin Anderson, Marcos Baghdatis, Michael Llodra, Bernard Tomic and Jo-Wilfried Tsonga losing a total of three sets: one in the third round to Baghdatis, one in the quarter-final to Tomic and one in the semifinal to Tsonga.
Rafael Nadal is the reigning champion and was obviously one of the favorites for the victory though at Wimbledon he isn’t as dominant as on clay. He reached the final defeating Michael Russell, Ryan Sweeting, Gilles Muller, Juan Martin Del Potro, Mardy Fish and Andy Murray losing a total of three sets, one in each of his last three matches.
Both Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic start the match serving well so there’s not even one break point until the tenth game, when the Spaniard’s serve drops a little. The Serbian takes advantage of his opponent’s second serves to break him at the first opportunity and win the first set 6-4.
At the beginning of the second set Novak Djokovic seems to have an edge on Rafael Nadal and in the second game he breaks his serve. The Spaniard struggles and in the sixth game the Serbian breaks him again then wins the set in the next game with a 6-1 which clearly shows his superiority.
Another player would likely have his head under the shower instead Rafael Nadal starts the third set still fighting and in the second game when Novak Djokovic makes some mistakes he takes advantage of them and for the first time he breaks him. The Spaniard gains confidence and in the sixth game he breaks his opponent again and then close the set in the next game with a 6-1 that only half an hour ago seemed unthinkable.
Rafael Nadal is still aggressive early in the fourth set and has a break point at its start but Djokovic keeps his serve and in the second game it’s him who breaks his opponent’s serve. The Spaniard however is playing well and in the third game breaks him back. Djokovic starts playing well again, in the eighth game he breaks Nadal’s serve and with his serve closes the set 6-3 conquering the match and his first Wimbledon title.

The extraordinary 2011 for Novak Djokovic continues beating Nadal in the fifth final this year, this time best of five sets. When he played his best he has shown he has countermeasures for the Spaniard’s shots so he deserves the Wimbledon title and the first place in the ranking that will be made official tomorrow.
Rafael Nadal is obviously disappointed he lost again to Djokovic and surely he’ll try to do something more to beat him. When the Serbian dropped his intensity the Spaniard reacted like no other player would but overall Djokovic was superior.
We don’t know how much longer Novak Djokovic will play at such amazing level, right now he’s surely the best player in the world.
