Roger Federer (photo ©Squeaky Knees) reached the final after remaining unbeaten in their group, where he defeated Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, Rafael Nadal and Mardy Fish, and after defeating David Ferrer in the semifinals. He lost two sets in the group stage, one to Tsonga one to Fish.
Jo-Wilfried Tsonga reached the final after in his group he lost his match against Roger Federer, he defeated Mardy Fish and Rafael Nadal in his other round robin matches and Tomas Berdych in the semifinals. In the matches he won he lost a set to Rafael Nadal.
The match starts with both Roger Federer and Jo-Wilfried Tsonga winning their service games until the eighth game, when the Swiss breaks the French and in the next game closes the set winning it 6-3.
In the second set Jo-Wilfried Tsonga is a bit less consistent and in the fifth game Roger Federer breaks him. In the tenth game the Swiss serves for the match but loses the game. The set is decided by a tie-break: both players serve pretty bad and eventually Tsonga wins it 8-6, a surprise considering that just a few minutes ago the match seemed to be over.
The third set looks like a photocopy of the first with Roger Federer and Jo-Wilfried Tsonga winning their service games until the eighth game, when the Swiss breaks the French and in the next game closes the set winning it 6-3 to conquering match and tournament.
Jo-Wilfried Tsonga played well most of this tournament offering less show and more substance than in the past. He still needs to get just the consistency needed to compete at the highest level: if he can mature a little more he can really do it.

Roger Federer ended well a season that for him was quite bad because he wonno Grand Slam tournament. Inevitably he’s in the declining phase of his career but he can still win something important.
This ATP Finals edition was a little strange. In previous years Rafael Nadal sometimes arrived at the end of the season with very little energy but this year none of the top three players in the ranking passed the group stage. Novak Djokovic at the end of a fantastic season reached the last tournaments with physical problems, probably aggravated by his patriotic attempt to play in Davis Cup despite the injury suffered in the U.S. Open final. It seemed a good opportunity for Andy Murray but the Scot has even withdrawn from the competition after his first match.
In the end, this ATP Finals edition was saved by another prestigious Roger Federer’s victory. It’s the sixth one for the Swiss champion, who sets a new record surpassing the Ivan Lendl and Pete Sampras’s five victories. Congratulations!
