Serena Williams (photo ©Emmett Anderson) reached the final defeating Anna Tatishvili, Caroline Garcia, Sorana Cirstea, Roberta Vinci, Svetlana Kuznetsova and Sara Errani. So far she has lost only one set in the quarter-finals to Kuznetsova. She has already won this tournament once, in 2002.
Maria Sharapova has reached the final defeating Su-Wei Hsieh, Eugenie Bouchard, Jie Zheng, Sloane Stephens, Jelena Jankovic and Victoria Azarenka. So far she has lost two sets: one in the quarter-finals to Jankovic and one in the semifinal to Azarenka. She’s the French Open defending champion.
The start of the match is tough for Maria Sharapova, who is 0-40 in the first game, wins three points in a row, offers another break point to Serena Williams but manages to win her service game. In the second game the Russian breaks the American but is broken back in the next game. Williams started the match quietly but increases the pace and in the fifth gamebreaks Sharapova again. In the eighth game the Russian breaks the American another time but is broken back in the next game and in the tenth game Serena Williams wins the first set 6-4.
The second set starts more or less like the first one, with Maria Sharapova offering break points to Serena Williams: in this case are as many as 5 in total but again she manages to win her service game. In the third game, however, the American breaks the Russian. Sharapova is a fighter and tries to fix the situation, in one case even coming to the net to win a point, which is against her nature, but in her return games she can do little. She manages to win her service games but at that point it’s inevitable that in the tenth game Serena Williams wins the second set 6-4 to conquer the match and the Roland Garros title.
After starting out in favor of Maria Sharapova, the match went on without surprises, with Serena Williams showing her superiority over her opponent. Last year, the Russian had proved to be the best at least on clay, this year she’s losing even on that surface. Surely she’ll try again to win the next Grand Slam tournaments, although it will be difficult.
Last year, Serena Williams had got into shape during the Wimbledon tournament, this year she already did it at the French Open winning the Grand Slam tournament that’s always been the hardest for her. As long as she’s in that shape it will be almost impossible to defeat her and in Wimbledon she’ll be by far the favorite for the victory.
