Rafael Nadal (photo ©Sylvain WEBER) reached the final defeating Daniel Brands, Martin Klizan, Fabio Fognini, Kei Nishikori, Novak Djokovic and Stanislas Wawrinka. So far he has lost four sets: one in the first round to Brands, one in the second round to Klizan and two in the semifinal to Djokovic. He’s in his eighth Roland Garros final and won all his previous ones.
David Ferrer reached the final defeating Marinko Matosevic, Albert Montanes, Feliciano Lopez, Kevin Anderson, Tommy Robredo and Jo-Wilfried Tsonga. So far he lost no sets. This is his first final in a Grand Slam tournament.
After the first two games easily won by the serving player, Rafael Nadal breaks David Ferrer but in the next game but makes some unforced error and is broken back. In the seventh game the defending champion breaks his opponent’s again. In the next game Nadal offers a break point but manages to win his service game then he breaks Ferrer again to win the first set 6-3.
At the beginning of the second set Rafael Nadal makes a few unforced errors and offers a break point to a reactive David Ferrer but eventually wins his service game and in the next game he breaks his opponent. It starts to rain a bit but the match can continue. In the fourth game the defending champion has two more break points but in the end Ferrer manages to win his service game and in the next game and he’s the one who has as many as five break points but Nadal manages to win his service game. It’s a time of intense struggle and in the sixth game still Nadal manages to break Ferrer. It’s the first of three straight Nbreaks that allow Nadal to win the second set 6-2.
In the third set Rafael Nadal breaks David Ferrer in the second game but is broken back in the next game. The rain becomes more intense and the match is interrupted but only for a few minutes and when it resumes it’s even more intense. In the seventh game Ferrer has a break point but Nadal wins his service game and in the next game he breaks his opponent then closes the third set 6-3 to conquer the match and his eighth title at the French Open Roland Garros.
David Ferrer is a great player and has finished an extraordinary tournament playing the final really well, he just lost to a super champion. Unfortunately for him he found some players who are already in the legend, otherwise he could’ve won some really important tournaments.
Rafael Nadal has won his eighth Roland Garros title, the first player in history to win eight times a Grand Slam tournament. I think at this point we can really say that he’s the greatest player ever on clay. Now he’s going to try to win again the other Grand Slam tournaments: it will be difficult but he’s back in shape so his opponents are warned.
