SpaceX has officially confirmed that it has received an investment for a total of one billion dollars from Google and Fidelity Investments, a multinational financial services corporation. The rumors of Google’s involvement in the aerospace company begun a few days ago, after its founder Elon Musk (photo ©Dan Taylor / Heisenberg Media) announced a project to build and launch a constellation of satellites that will provide Internet services around the world and even in space.

Google has been making investments that have the purpose of expanding the presence of the Internet in the world for some time. It’s carrying out the Project Loon, which is based on the use of balloons to bring high-speed Internet in areas not covered. Last year, Google bought Titan Aerospace, a manufacturer of drones that could be used for the same purpose.

In 2014, Google also bought Skybox Imaging, a manufacturer of small satellites specialized in taking pictures at high resolution. In this case, the acquisition was dictated by the desire to improve the services Google Maps and Google Earth.

Apparently that wasn’t enough for Google, which has now acquired a share of SpaceX, the most dynamic and innovative company in the aerospace field. Together with Fidelity, now it owns about 10% of it and this brings the company’s value at $10 billion confirming how important it’s become.

This investment by Google in SpaceX is important for the expansion of the Internet around the world and beyond as Elon Musk wants to take it even to Mars. Google’s co-founder and CEO Larry Page (Photo ©Marcin Mycielski) already showed interest in space exploration supporting Planetary Resources, a company that is studying the possibility of exploiting the asteroids for their minerals.

According to Elon Musk’s statements, building and launch the satellite constellation that will bring the Internet around the world and in space will cost $10 billion. The investment arrived now will help but SpaceX founder immediately stated that it’s a long-term plan. Now this project has brought together two of the most innovative companies in the world so it wouldn’t be surprising if in the future Internet was available for a colony on Mars.
