Roberta Vinci reached the final defeating Vania King, Denisa Allertova, Mariana Duque-Marino, had a walkover at the fourth round following Eugenie Bouchard’s withdrawal then defeated Kristina Mladenovic and Serena Williams. So far she lost 4 sets to Allertova, Duque-Marino, Mladenovic and Williams. This is her first final in a Grand Slam singles tournament while in doubles she won five titles completing the “career Slam”.
At the beginning of the match both Flavia and Pennetta Roberta Vinci are understandably tense and they both try to impose their game. The two players have known each other since they were little girls so none is able to surprise the other. After the first game in which the players can take advantage of the service, in the fifth game Pennetta manages to break her opponent at the seventh break point. In the eighth game Vince successfully exploits some mistakes by Pennetta and obtains the counter-break tieing the score 4-4. They go to the tie-break, where Pennetta takes the first lead at 3-2, gives the mini-break away at the seventh point, takes the lead again on 5-3 and wins the first set tie-break 7-4.
In the second set Roberta Vinci tries to change something but makes some mistakes while Flavia Pennetta seems to have found a bit of confidence and in the second game breaks her opponent. Vinci tries again and in the third game has a break point but Pennetta wins her service game. Pennetta now seems to have found a certain measure with her return and in the fourth game breaks Vinci agains but gets broken back in the next game. On 5-2 Pennetta breaks Vinci another time to win the second set 6-2, conquer the match and the U.S. Open title.
Roberta Vinci had a career that reached high level in recent years in singles and was outstanding ub doubles winning all the Grand Slam titles along with Sara Errani. However, in singles she won only small tournaments and in Grand Slams her best results were a few fourth rounds. In this U.S. Open she was slightly favored when some potentially very strong opponents lost. However, in the semifinals she made a masterpiece defeating Serena Williams with a classic-style tennis made of many sliced backhands but also not being intimidated by the n. 1 in the world who wanted to complete the Grand Slam.
Today Roberta Vinci played all in all well but failed to give her best in the tie-break and the advantage of a set was decisive for Pennetta. Almost certainly this was a unique opportunity, she still played an amazing tournament and the American crowed appreciated her very much for her tennis skills but also for her competitive spirit and her pleasantness.
Flavia Pennetta had a high level career in both singles and doubles since in the past she’s been in the top 10 of the WTA rankings in singles and even n. 1 in the WTA doubles along with Gisela Dulko. After her wrist injury of 2012 it seemed that her career was on the decline, however she slowly came back to high levels and last year won Indian Wells.
Today Flavia Pennetta played the first set but rather contracted but match, she expressed even her willingness to retire from her activity. It’s unclear whether her career ends now or when she’s going to play her last match. Waiting for her to give her fans some clarification, she can enjoy this great triumph.
