Arnold Alois Schwarzenegger (photo ©Munich Security Conference) was born on July 30, 1947 in Thal, Austria.
Driven by his father, Arnold Schwarzenegger started practicing various sports since his childhood and when he was 14 years old he started practicing bodybuilding but also powerlifting. After a few years he started winning titles in the field of bodybuilding up to the first of seven titles of Mr. Olympia in 1970. For some time he was also a commentator for CBS and even after retiring from competitions he remained connected to that world in various ways and in any case is remembered as one of the legends of bodybuilding.
While he was still competing, Arnold Schwarzenegger started getting some roles in movie productions where an actor with his characteristics was needed. For his role in the 1976 movie “Stay Hungry” movie he won a Golden Globe as Golden Globe for New Male Star of the Year, although actually he was in his third movie. His first leading role came with the 1977 documentary movie “Pumping Iron”.
After some other roles in movie productions and in some TV shows, Arnold Schwarzenegger gained great success as the protagonist of the 1982 film “Conan the Barbarian”. The film had a sequel in 1984, “Conan the Destroyer”. The great success was repeated again in 1984 playing the cyborg in the movie “Terminator” after director James Cameron initially cast him to interpret Kyle Reese. Despite the limited budget, success resulted in the creation of a franchise with various sequels and a TV show.
Arnold Schwarzenegger also starred in other action movies such as “Commando” in 1985, “Raw Deal” in 1986 and “Danko” in 1988 and some science fiction ones such as “The Running Man in 1987 and the cult movies “Predator” in 1987 and “Total Recall” in 1990. In the late 1980s he started working in comedies such as “Twins” in 1988 and “A Kindergarten Cop” in 1990.
The 1990s began with a renewed success for Arnold Schwarzenegger with “Terminator 2: Judgment Day” in 1991 but continued with ups and downs because some of his movies succeeded such as “True Lies” in 1994 but others obtained less than what was hoped such as “Last Action Hero” in 1993.
In 2003 Arnold Schwarzenegger temporarily withdrew from the scenes when he won the California election becoming the state governor. His mandate ended in 2011 but he first started with a cameo in his 2010 movie “The Expendables” his collaboration with Sylvester Stallone and then participated in the sequels “The Expendables 2” (2012) and “The Expendables 3” (2014).
Among the various Arnold Schwarzenegger’s movies in recent years there’s one different from the others, “Maggie” (2015), of which he was also a producer. That’s an apocalyptic horror but it’s not the usual action movie one would expect with that kind of protagonist.
Arnold Schwarzenegger changed the world of bodybuilding and with some iconic roles has become a big movie star. He has some movie projects under development, including reprising the role as Conan that has contributed so much to his fame.
