Ettore Messina has resigned as coach of Real Madrid after the team yesterday lost a game valid for the final round of the Euroleague Top 16 against Montepaschi Siena. Actually the game didn’t matter because Real Madrid had already clinched the first position in the its group but Messina didn’t accept his players’ attitude and after the defeat he also apologized to the fans.
Today Ettore Messina announced his decision to resign as coach of Real Madrid. It seems that the team’s executives tried to convince him to stay but without success.
Ettore Messina had become the Real Madrid coach in 2009 and obviously the project was to win another Euroleague, a trophy that the Italian coach has already won four times, twice with Virtus Bologna and two with CSKA Moscow.

In the last season Real Madrid won nothing, this season fans were hoping that Ettore Messina succededed in giving the team the right imprint but something was missing because they didn’t win the Copa del Rey played a few weeks ago, they lost their last two games in the Liga ACB and yesterday they lost badly the last Euroleague game.
Of course, hopes of winning the Euroleague and the Liga ACB are still intact but obviously there was something wrong because a coach who has confidence in his players doesn’t resign for a game badly approached.
Perhaps we’ll know more in the coming days, perhaps later, perhaps never. Ettore Messina has many admirers around Europe so his problem will be in finding a team adequate for a coach with his resume. For some time there have been rumors of his possible arrival in Milan: we just have to wait a few months to find out with what team Ettore Messina will try to win more titles to add to the long list of those he already conquered.

After all, they are going up against a squad that is led by a Euroleague veteran coach, Svestislav Pesic, who himself has had a few Euroleague titles on his belt. This makes the series even more interesting than it already is…
