Google, in collaboration with China Mobile International, China Telecom Global, Global Transit, KDDI and SingTel with NEC as a manufacturer, has announced the construction of a submarine cable that will provide an extremely fast Internet connection between the west coast of the USA and Japan.

The task will cost $300 dollars and is expected to become operational in the second quarter of 2016. The communication speed of this cable, called Faster, will reach 60 Terabit per second, that is 600,000 times the speed of 100 Mbps connections.

Submarine cables have become an important component of the Internet, so much that in 2008 the communications between Europe and Asia had big problems when a cable was cut near Alexandria, Egypt. Japan had problems communicating with the rest of the world when some cables were damaged following the earthquake and tsunami of 2011.

The Faster cable will allow to reach speeds higher than ever taking advantage of the latest technology for transmission over fiber-optic. This will improve communications between important areas of the USA such as Los Angeles, San Francisco, Portland and Seattle areas with the Japanese Chikura and Shima. In Japan, Faster will provide the connection to another cable system that will enhance the communication with the whole nation and other Asian nations as well.

For Google, the participation in this significant investment is required to allow Japanese users to adequately use its services. YouTube only consumes a lot of bandwidth and more and more often videos are high definition. Add to this the fact that usually Android mobile devices maintain an open connection with a Google data center somewhere.

The Asian market is growing rapidly and in past years Google already participated in the construction of submarine cables such as the one called Unity, which also connects the USA and Japan. In 2011 the company participated in a similar project to strengthen the connections between various Asian nations.

Google is investing a great deal to enhance the Internet infrastructure in various parts of the world and a few years ago started providing high-speed connections for end users in some cities of the USA with the Google Fiber service. The company does all of that because it makes money from services that are enhanced by greater speed but in the end this leads to an advantage for all users and operators.
