Jon Pertwee in 1996

John Devon Roland Pertwee – this is his birth name – was born on July 7, 1919 in London, England. His first acting experiences were in radio programs but World War II broke out and Pertwee served in the British Navy and in 1941 he was assigned to the Naval Intelligence Division (NID).

In 1969 Jon Pertwee was cast to play the Third Doctor in the TV show “Doctor Who”. It was a period of great changes in the show’s production as it which moved from black & white to color TV concentrating it on a lower number of episodes per series. That era reached a new peak in popularity but in 1974 the actor announced that he’d leave the show.

Jon Pertwee died on May 20, 1996 following a heart attack, leaving his wife Ingeborg Rhoesa, their son Sean and their daughter Dariel, who followed in his footsteps. Jon Pertwee is known all over the world above all for playing the Third Doctor but he was an eclectic actor and throughout his career he’s been famous in his country for many quirky characters played using funny voices.

James Hugh Calum Laurie – this is his full name – was born on June 11, 1959 in Oxford, England. He gained fame on television by participating in the shows “The Black Adder”, “A Bit of Fry and Laurie” with his friend Stephen Fry, and “Jeeves and Wooster”. On several occasions he showed not only his skills as an actor but also as a musician as he learned to play various instruments since his childhood.

After gaining fame for years in his British homeland, Hugh Laurie also became famous in the USA when he started playing the cranky but brilliant Dr. Gregory House in the TV show “House, M.D.” in 2004. During the eight seasons of the show, Laurie won two Golden Globes for Best Actor along with various other awards.

Ian McKellen was born on May 25, 1939, in Burnley, England. After studying at the University of Cambridge, he kept on studying theater working for a few years for small theater companies. In 1964, he was invited to join the National Theatre Company.

Ian McKellen’s participation in the movie “Apt Pupil” was his first work with director Bryan Singer, with whom he kept on collaborating when he played for the first time the character of Magneto in “X-Men” (2000). The actor reprised the role in various movies of the following years again for Bryan Singer, except in “X-Men: The Last Stand”, directed by Brett Ratner. In 2001, the first movie of “The Lord of the Rings” trilogy was released, in which the actor plays Gandalf, a role reprised in the following decade in “The Hobbit” trilogy, with both trilogies directed by Peter Jackson.

Today, Ian McKellen is very well known to the general public thanks to his roles in highly successful sagas, but his reputation has been remarkable for decades. His name is linked to productions at the moment in various stages so even if he’s no longer a boy we can still see him in new roles.

David Boreanaz was born on May 16, 1969 in Buffalo, New York, USA. During his school years, David Boreanaz practiced various sports at a good level but at the Ithaca University he graduated in cinema and photography in 1991 with the intention of starting an acting career.

The great change in David Boreanaz’s career came when he was cast to play Angel in the TV show “Buffy the Vampire Slayer”, which began in 1997. Starting in 2005, David Boreanaz played FBI agent Seeley Booth in the TV show “Bones”. In 2017 David Boreanaz started playing Jason Hayes in the TV show “SEAL Team”, which follows the missions of a Navy SEAL unit.

Sergio Leone was born on January 3, 1929 in Rome, Italy. His first experiences related to cinema were also as an extra actor but already in the 1940s he started working as an assistant director or director of the second unit, often without being credited, somtimes in major productions such as “Bicycle Thieves”, “Quo Vadis” and “Ben-Hur”, and as a screenwriter.

Sergio Leone died on April 30, 1989 of a heart attack. With a few movies he changed western cinema going far beyond the stereotypes of the genre adding a remarkable realism, up to adding in his last movies also social and political elements that generated some controversy. His legacy is important and remains alive.
