Deuterium-tritium fusion diagram

Controlled nuclear fusion has been considered for decades one of the possible solutions to the world’s energy needs. The amount of energy obtained would be really huge but the problems to solve seem even bigger. In short, so far the energy used to obtain the reaction was greater than that emitted. However, in recent days two different reports of progress arrived.

Scott Carpenter in 1964 (Photo NASA)

Yesterday the American astronaut and aquanaut Scott Carpenter, one of the first seven astronauts selected for the Mercury program, died. A short time ago he had a stroke from which he appeared to be recovering but in recent days his condition deteriorated up to his death. Born on May 1, 1925, Carpenter was an austronaut of the Mercury-Atlas 7 space mission and an aquanaut of the Sealab-II mission.

After many rumors and a lot of waiting for “Doctor Who” fans, after Tuesday’s first announcement came the official confirmation of the discovery of the 6 episodes of the adventure “The Enemy of the World” and 5 of the 6 episodes of the adventure “The Web of Fear” (the third episode wasn’t found). The third episode of “The Enemy of the World” and the first episode of “The Web of Fear” had been found in the past so nine lost episodes are now available.

It was yesterday’s afternoon in the USA when NASA’s Juno spacecraft did a flyby being within 500 km (350 miles) of Earth. This maneuver is part of the complex trajectory that will bring Juno to Jupiter and had the purpose of using the Earth’s gravity to increase its speed enough to reach Jupiter. During that operation, it went unexpectedly into “safe mode” but it seems that it actually has no real problems.

There are always rumors about the possible discovery of lost “Doctor Who” episodes but in recent months there were more than ever. However, they were absolutely inconsistent and contradictory because the number of episodes found ranged from 2 to 106, where the latter actually indicates all the missing episodes. Yesterday, BBC News published an article in which it confirms that some episodes were actually found but without further details.
After a few hours, actress Deborah Watling, who played Victoria in the classic “Doctor Who” series, announced on her website that on the afternoon of Thursday October 10 she and her colleague Frazer Hines, who played Jamie in the classic series, will participate in the launch of the found episodes.
