If Tomorrow Comes by Nancy Kress

The novel “If Tomorrow Comes” by Nancy Kress was published for the first time in 2018. It’s the second book in the Yesterday’s Kin trilogy and follows “Tomorrow’s Kin”.

The starship Friendship has reached the planet Kindred, also called simply World, the Denebs’ home. Onboard, in addition to the crew, there are scientists and diplomats protected by a team of rangers. They expect to work together with an advanced civilization, but the only other starship they find in the area is Russian, arrived only to destroy World’s civilization and the Friendship, and then return to Earth.

A shuttle from the Friendship manages to escape the Russian attack and land on World, where the Earthlings find a low-tech civilization capable of building a starship only thanks to the instructions left by whoever brought the Denebs to World many millennia before. The natives don’t have enough scientific knowledge to discover a vaccine that will protect them from the lethal spores that will soon hit the planet.

An article published in the journal “Science Advances” reports the presentation of the project of a so-called soft robot created inspired by the cheetah’s biomechanics. This type of robot, called Leveraging Elastic instabilities for Amplified Performance (LEAP), can move much faster on solid surfaces than previous generations of soft robots. Another skill of LEAP is to grasp objects gently or with enough force to lift heavy objects. The idea of ​​its creators is to propose a new paradigm for soft robots with different possibilities for their construction and use.

Hearts, Hands and Voices aka The Broken Land by Ian McDonald

The novel “Hearts, Hands and Voices”, published in the USA as “The Broken Land”, by Ian McDonald was published for the first time in 1992.

Mathembe Fileli lives with her family in the village of Chepsenyt, where there’s peace despite the religious and political differences between its inhabitants. But when they offer refuge to some rebels who are fighting against the Empire Across the River, they can’t keep it secret and imperial troops arrive and set fire to the entire village, forcing the inhabitants to flee.

Only Mathembe’s grandfather’s head remains, and the girl takes it away with her, because it’s still alive, on her journey in search of a new home and the rest of her family, from which she got separated. In a decaying empire, such a journey is dangerous because grandfather and granddaughter risk having problems with both the authorities and the rebels.

Lance James Henriksen was born on May 5, 1940 in New York, USA. In 1970 Lance Henriksen had the opportunity to join the cast of a stage play for which he had painted the scenarios with the complication that he was illiterate. Gradually he learned to read, also thanks to the scripts of the works in which he started finding roles, in theater, television and cinema. He reached the pinnacle of fame in television when Cris Carter created the TV show “Millennium” thinking of him as the protagonist. The show ran for three seasons and he was nominated for a Golden Globe for three straight years. The show had a sort of ending in an episode of “The X-Files”.

The second season of “Westworld” offered a mix of introspection, various philosophical elements, and intrigue mixing philosophical, ethical, and moral themes.
