Bethesda Softworks, a publisher specializing in videogames owned by ZeniMax Media Inc. which also owns videogame producer id Software, announced that Doom 3 will be published this fall in the BFG Edition, a new commemorative edition of the entire legendary saga of Doom. This edition will in fact contain Doom, Doom ][, and Doom 3 and the Resurrection of Evil expansion pack with new 7 levels titled “The Lost Mission”.

In “The Lost Mission”, players assume the roles of Bravo Team, a company of marine space that players had originally to save in Doom 3. The first of those 7 new levels starts with one of the members of Bravo Team who wakes up and has to help a group of scientists shut down a teleporter to Earth to prevent an invasion of demons.

Doom 3 BFG Edition will be released in the PC, Xbox 360 version and for the first time in the Playstation 3 version. ZeniMax Media announced that Doom 3, Resurrection of Evil and The Lost Mission have been optimized for 3D, will have support for 5.1 surround sound, Xbox 360 achievements and PlayStation 3 trophies. A flashlight integrated into the shell was also introduced to allow players to have light while they are shooting.

The Doom franchise got renewed in time and now it’s possible to use this new version of Doom 3 to play in a virtual reality. The game was in fact tested by the magazine “The Verge” with id Software’s founder John Carmack’s head-mounted display “Oculus Rift” system that contains a screen with a resolution of 640×800 for each eye for a total of 1280×800.

The resolution isn’t very high considering that many players are now used to play at 1920×1080 but according to those who tested the game the immersion factor is fantastic. This is due to a 90 degree visual of the “Oculus Rift” system. The framerate was 60 fps with low latency.

Neither a specific date for the release of Doom 3 BFG Edition nor its price were yet established. Many fans of the Doom saga probably already have all the games and the novelty would only new levels. People who have a 2D TV-set or screen, however, will have the chance to play Doom 3 with a realism never seen before.
