The City We Became by N.K. Jemisin

The novel “The City We Became” by N.K. Jemisin was published for the first time in 2020. It’s the first book of the Great Cities series. It won the Locus and BSFA Awards.

Various people discover that they are the avatars of certain boroughs of New York while an artist discovers that he’s the avatar of the entire city from the avatar of Sao Paulo. Some of them are attacked by shapeshifters and strange tendrils but manage to repel those attacks.

Manny, the avatar of Manhattan, is confronted by a mysterious woman but manages to defeat her thanks to the help of the avatar of Brooklyn. Various types of attacks follow, not always direct because in some cases, they exploit corruption and fascist groups.

FBI Code Red by Lee Gimenez

The novel “FBI Code Red” by Lee Gimenez was published for the first time in 2017. It’s part of the J.T. Ryan series.

J.T. Ryan hired Lisa Booth, a young detective who can assist him during his investigations. The opportunity arrives immediately, when FBI Assistant Director Erin Welch tasks him with gathering information on a possible money laundering case. The suspicion is confirmed when the two private detectives intercept the clandestine transport of a huge amount of money.

The traces connect the money to the Chinese embassy but it is practically impossible to follow them using normal means even for J.T. Ryan. His interference was noticed and the director of the FBI declares a Code Red that means that J.T. Ryan is placed on the terrorist list. The man turns to one of the very few people he trusts to prove his innocence.

In the Shadow by Steve Ramirez

The novel “In the Shadow” by Steve Ramirez was published for the first time in 2022. It’s the second book in the S’orne Saga and follows “The Great Migration”.

Bellona brought Keldiari to the village where other botari live despite various difficulties, including communication between the two women. The botari welcome Keldiari with relief and the rest of the community welcomes her while Bellona is viewed with suspicion and is practically segregated. Toshi tries to make her understand the situation and teach some botari knowledge but Bellona is very frustrated after everything that happened to her.

The capital city struggles to recover from the attack and the king must work to keep the heart of the kingdom going after the terrible human losses suffered. Princess Dorinda helps the orphans of the capital city and her fury seems uncontainable after some men steal the food intended for them by brutally beating her tutor.

I, Alastair by Robert Mammone

The novel “I, Alastair” by Robert Mammone was published for the first time in 2020.

Alastair Lethbridge-Stewart faces attempts to overthrow the British Republic. The attacks by forces seeking to undermine the power of the Party and the Leader are becoming more violent and the response must be resolute.

Being the son of one of the Party’s big shots can be a privilege but it also brings burdens, such as the comparisons Alastair Lethbridge-Stewart has to endure with his older brother. He must prove himself worthy of his family, also contributing to his father’s power position, a crucial commitment at a time when the Leader’s health is declining.

Flinx's Folly by Alan Dean Foster

The novel “Flinx’s Folly” by Alan Dean Foster was published for the first time in 2003 and in its internal chronology follows “Reunion”. It’s part of the Pip and Flinx series.

When Flinx wakes up in a hospital after fainting and sees that there are several other people in the same situation, he realizes that his mental powers have manifested in a new way. After running from the hospital for fear of being recognized by the authorities who are looking for him, he is attacked by strangers.

Tried by the latest events and by the growing awareness of an approaching cosmic catastrophe, Flinx thinks he must stop to reflect on his life and what he must do. He travels to the planet New Riviera, where Clarity Held, an old flame, works. However, the woman is dating another man who immediately sees Flinx as a rival.
