Western Digital Corporation has announced it has reached an agreement to buy the flash memory maker SanDisk Corporation. Western Digital will pay $86.50 for each SanDisk share of which $85.10 in cash and the rest in shares for a total of about $19 billion. SanDisk CEO Sanjay Mehrotra will join Western Digital’s board of directors.
NASA has opened a new website to host the photographs of the Earth taken by the DSCOVR (Deep Space Climate Observatory) satellite from its orbit, about a million and a half kilometers (about 930,000 miles) from the planet. This mission, jointly managed by NASA, NOAA (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration) and U.S. Air Force, has its main aim in monitoring solar wind but it also takes pictures of the Earth.

An article published this month in the journal “Science” describes a research that brings evidence to support the theory that the extinction of the dinosaurs was caused by the combination of the impact of an asteroid and a strong volcanism caused precisely by that event. About 66 million years ago, at the end of the Cretaceous period, the impact of an asteroid near today’s Yucatan peninsula might have caused exceptional phenomena of volcanism in India, in the area known as the Deccan Traps.
An article in the journal “Nature Communications” describes a study of fossilized eggs of various species of dinosaurs which allowed to infer their body temperature. A team of scientists from UCLA obtained different results and concluded that some dinosaurs were warm-blooded while others had a limited ability to control their temperature, halfway between reptiles and birds.
