An article published in the “South African Journal of Science” describes the sophisticated technologies used to create a 3D map of the cave in which the bones of more than 1,500 hominid fossils called Homo Naledi were found. The team of Professor Lee Berger of the University of the Witwatersrand’s (Wits) was forced to work in difficult conditions and it’s for this reason that Ashley Kruger, part of his team, turned to various technologies to map the cave.

Red Mars by Kim Stanley Robinson

The novel “Red Mars” by Kim Stanley Robinson was published for the first time in 1992. It won the Nebula and BSFA awards. It’s the first novel in the Mars trilogy.

In 2026 the Ares expedition is launched to Mars with a hundred pioneers to create an outpost in preparation for a future colonization. The mission is mainly supported by the USA and Russia and the pioneers are supposed to proceed with the operations following the directives that come from the Earth but even before reaching the red planet disagreements and differences of opinion begin.

The main reasons for discussion come from one of the key decisions for the future of Mars: its terraforming. Some believe that the planet should be kept as it is, others think it’s fair to transform it to make colonization easier. Things get complicated when new settlers start arriving.

The short story “Fungal Gardens” by Ekaterina Sedia was published for the first time in 2009.

David is called by his partner Johnny to help him in the investigation of the death of a man as in the victim’s head they found fungi. The analysis is more complex than expected and potentially dangerous. The possible connection with the presence of ants on the scene of a similar death casts a sinister light on the case.
