Robotics company Boston Dynamics has released a video to celebrate what it hopes is a better year showing the ability of some of its robots to dance to the tune “Do You Love Me?”. In particular, two humanoid robots demonstrate their balancing skills by remaining on one leg at certain moments. In some parts of the video they’re accompanied by a quadrupedal robot and another robot that moves on two wheels.
Boston Dynamics is a well-known company for being at the forefront of robot development, in particular for their movement skills. Humans take the ability to walk on two legs for granted, but for decades the development of bipedal robots has been slow and difficult. Boston Dynamics has developed robots with different movement abilities: bipedal, quadrupedal, and even robots that move on wheels.
Over the years, Boston Dynamics has gone through a number of acquisitions but, regardless of the owner, kept on releasing videos showing the progress of their robots. For this reason, it’s also not new to videos that take advantage of holidays to show some models.
The Christmas video released by Boston Dynamics for Christmas 2015 received some criticism because many people found it disturbing. Robots with vaguely android features have been compared to the Terminator. This time, the company’s robots performed a dance to the tune of “Do You Love Me?”. The bipedal robots showed their ability to move smoothly on two legs and at certain times remained balanced on one leg. That’s a huge progress considering robots from not many years ago that struggled to keep their balance on two legs.
The reactions to the Boston Dynamics videos can give an idea of how much the public may have become accustomed to the existence of such sophisticated robots. Fears will probably remain for a long time, so it will be difficult to see them moving in a crowd. They’re robots useful in rescue operations, especially in situations that are dangerous for humans.
