Andy Murray (foto Carine06) reached the final defeating Benjamin Becker, Yen-Hsun Lu, Tommy Robredo, Mikhail Youzhny, Fernando Verdasco and Jerzy Janowicz. So far he lost a total of three sets: two to Verdasco and one to Janowicz. This is his second consecutive final at Wimbledon.
Novak Djokovic reached the final defeating Florian Mayer, Bobby Reynolds, Jeremy Chardy, Tommy Haas, Tomas Berdych and Juan Martin Del Potro. So far he lost two sets to Del Potro. He’s at his second Wimbledon final after the one he won in 2011.
Andy Murray started slowly his last two matches, instead at the start of the final he’s aggressive and already in the first game has three consecutive break points but Novak Djokovic manages to win his service game. The intensity is remarkable and at the end of a tough third game the Scot breaks the Serb but is broken back in the next game. Sometimes Murray falls back into his classic flaw, the tendency to be passive, but overall is very solid and in the seventh game breaks Djokovic again. The Serb tries to be proactive and in the eighth game has three balls for the counter-break but the Scot wins his service game. Andy Murray wins the first set 6-4.
The second set is balanced at its start until the fourth game, in which Novak Djokovic breaks Andy Murray. The Scot doesn’t give up and in the seventh game to the third break point he breaks the Serb. In the eighth game Djokovic has two break points but Murray wins his service game. Is the eleventh game Andy Murray breaks the Serbi again then closes the second set 7-5.
In the third set Andy Murray has great confidence and breaks Novak Djokovic in the first game. The Serb is shocked but recovers quickly, in the fourth game breaks the Scot and he does it again in the sixth game. Murray reacts, in the seventh game breaks Djokovic and he does it again in the ninth game. The Scot serves for the title, goes on 40-0 but doesn’t close, offers three break points but in the end Andy Murray wins the third set 6-4 conquering the match and the title of Wimbledon.
Despite the surprises with Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer early losses, eventually the two top two seeds reached the final. There were no surprises because the two finalists know each other very well. The match was intense from the competitive point of view with some nice shots and some nice rallies but overall it wasn’t particularly spectacular.
Novak Djokovic was altogether more proactive than his opponent but he made 40 unforced errors against 21 of the Scot having at the same time less winners. The difference between the two wasn’t much, just enough to determine the final result. Certainly for the Serb it’s a disappointment so we can expect him to be even more motivated at the U.S. Open.
Andy Murray had a lot of pressure, also due to the disappointment for his defeat in last year’s final. Today he limited the moments when he was too passive having others when he was more aggressive and with his great consistency he finally won the Wimbledon title the whole Great Britain had been waiting for 77 years. Now the time is past in which someone feared that he was a loser and he’ll be more than ever one of the favorite players in the next big tournaments.
