On November 23, 2013 there will be the 50th anniversary of “Doctor Who”. To celebrate this important moment let’s go over the Doctor’s history again. This article remembers the Eleventh Doctor.
Played by Matt Smith, the Eleventh Doctor is the result of an explosive regeneration that has a profound effect also on the Tardis, which regenerates with him. Also due to the fact that the Tenth Doctor had no companions, this leads to a significant change from the previous era.
The Eleventh Doctor recalls in many ways the Second Doctor having some of his features in an even more pronounced way. His playful behavior often seems even more childish because he looks so young and has an even greater tendency to opt for running as an emergency solution when things don’t go as planned.
At the same time, the Eleventh Doctor seems to have perfected the manipulation techniques already widely used by some of his predecessors. He has no problem using the information he has depending on his convenience, even keeping them secret to his companions when his plans require it.
Initially, the Eleventh Doctor also uses the reputation built over centuries to achieve his purposes and possibly to stop an enemy before a situation deteriorates or at least to buy time. Over time, however, the thought of the actions committed in the course of his life makes him feel all his age and makes him act with greater secrecy.
After the regeneration, the Eleventh Doctor meets Amy Pond when she’s a child but soon after he travels in time without realizing that he jumped several years forward and meets her again when she’s grown up. With some delay, Amy becomes his companion and soon the two of them meet River Song.
While waiting for the return of the Eleventh Doctor, Amy got engaged to Rory, who only later starts traveling with them. The two of them get married and continue their travels with the Doctor but their adventures become more and more complicated, also because they cross path several times with River Song but their timelines are out of phase.
It’s one of those occasions that the Eleventh Doctor and his companions get together with the Silurian Madame Vastra, her human wife Jenny and the Sontaran Strax, who form the so-called Paternoster Gang. The Doctor ends up marrying River Song and that makes her, Amy and Rory literally his family.
On another occasion, the Eleventh Doctor meets for the first time Clara but since she’s been turned into a Dalek he can never see her and she calls herself Oswin Oswald. The Dalek-girl dies and her story seems over.
The separation of the Eleventh Doctor from Amy and Rory is traumatic and he retires for a while in Victorian London, where he meets Clara, who dies in the battle with an ancient enemy, the Great Intelligence. The Doctor realizes that Clara and Oswin Oswald were the same person, although that’s impossible. In the present London, he meets another Clara, who finally became his companion and after various adventures allows him to solve the mystery of the impossible girl.
The Eleventh Doctor era will end soon but there are still two really special episodes for the 50th “Doctor Who” anniversary and for Christmas 2013.
