“That Hope Is You, Part 1” is the 1st episode of the 3rd season of the TV show “Star Trek: Discovery”, which starts again after “Such Sweet Sorrow Part 2“.

Note. This article contains spoilers about “That Hope Is You, Part 1”.

Michael Burnham (Sonequa Martin-Green) exits the wormhole and ends up in the midst of space wrecks while there’s a clash between two starships. She crashes on a nearby planet together with one of the two starships, driven by Book (David Ajala). She discovers that she’s in the year 3188, that the Federation has collapsed, and there’s no trace of the USS Discovery, which was her only hope of not being completely lost in a place and time that is not her own.

The Season 2 finale of “Star Trek: Discovery” indicated that there was going to be some sort of reboot as Michael Burnham and the USS Discovery embarked on a journey into an unknown future. A very simple description of this new beginning is that it’s a mix of “Andromeda” and “Star Wars”. Michael Burnham arrival in the future, where she found herself all alone, also reminded me of the debut of the 13th Doctor, separated from the Tardis. I don’t know if Book can be considered her new companion given his personal history as a courier who’s not exactly caring for any laws.

The episode’s development is honestly rather dull, also considering that it was written by showrunners Michelle Paradise and Alex Kurtzman along with Jenny Lumet. Basically, it serves to introduce the new situation, and from this point of view it can work, but the fantasy is honestly very limited.

A criticism against “Star Trek: Discovery” concern its dark tones, very different from the underlying optimism of Gene Roddenberry’s vision. The collapse of the Federation of that future has already led to new criticisms, but at the end of “That Hope Is You, Part 1” there’s at least one hope for the future. Some fragments of the Federation still exist, although people like Aditya Sahil (Adil Hussain) are considered true believers, as if the ideals behind the organization were a religion.

“That Hope is You, Part 1” is based on Michael Burnham and Book, I expect the USS Discovery to reappear soon, possibly in the next episode already (I haven’t looked for spoilers so I don’t know). I Hope to see some fantasy in the next plots.
