Swiss tennis player Patty Schnyder (photo ©Charlie Cowins) has announced her retirement from professional competitions.

Patty Schnyder was born on December 14, 1978 in Basel, Switzerland. She became a professional tennis player in 1993 beginning with some ITF tournaments. In 1994 she started playing WTA tournaments and her first great achievements came in 1998, when she won five tournaments and reached the quarter-finals at Roland Garros and the U.S. Open.

In early 1999 Patty Schnyder entered for the first time the Top 10 in the WTA ranking. In that moment of great results however she got convinced by a man who was ambiguous to say the least to adopt a strange diet that made ​​her lose her strength with a negative impact on her results.

Patty Schnyder’s parents hired a private investigator to find a way to save their daughter from that negative situation and he succeeded so well that he ended up marrying Patty.

For some years there were only sporadic victories for Patty Schnyder however in 2002 she won in Zurich, a high-level tournament played in her nation. It’s no accident that she indicated it as her greatest victory.

In 2004 Patty Schnyder had her best result in a Grand Slam tournament with the semifinal at the Australian Open.

In 2005 Patty Schnyder came back into the Top 10 of the WTA rankings and won two tournaments.

In the following years Patty Schnyder began a slow decline and in 2008 she won her last WTA tournament.

In April 2011 Patty Schnyder played in Federation Cup for Switzerland and along with Timea Bascinszky she brought her nation into World Group II.

In her career Patty Schnyder also won five double titles, mostly playing with Barbara Schett.

Patty Schnyder had already indicated her intention to retire, yesterday the official announcement of his decision arrived.

Tennis loses a left-handed player of great talent capable of expressing a game full of variations, well above the repetitive style of the majority of the other players.

In her personal life Patty Schnyder has always given the impression that she needed someone to give her stability but she didn’t always choose the right person to trust. Let’s hope that she can find the right balance for her future life.
