On March 12, 1989, Tim Berners-Lee distributed a proposal for the creation of a new system for the distribution of information, a web of notes with links between them. This was the original concept of the World Wide Web. On this anniversary, its creator calls for the creation of a Magna Carta for the web, the equivalent of one of the basic documents for British democracy to protect the freedom of the people from surveillance.

Facebook has announced the acquisition of WhatsApp, the famous instant messaging application for mobile devices. The price that Mark Zuckerberg’s social network will pay is $16 billion of which $4 billion in cash and $12 billion in Facebook shares. An additional $3 billion in restricted Facebook shares will be paid as a bonus tied to WhatsApp’s founders and employees that will vest over four years subsequent to closing. WhatsApp Inc. CEO Jan Koum will enter Facebook’s board of directors.

CloudFlare, a company that provides various web services, including security-related, reported to have been the victim of an online attack that affected the company’s data centers in Europe and the USA. The DDoS attack has exceeded 400 Gbps, making it the most massive ever recorded in the history of the Internet.

Edward Snowden’s revelations confirmed fears that in the past might have seemed paranoid about the surveillance even ordinary people are subjected to. Under the guise of protecting the people, in particular the American NSA started spying even on American citizens and allies such as the German Chancellor Angela Merkel. Today the initiative “The day we fight back” intends to allow the people to have their voices heard in favor of privacy and freedom.

In the last days, in the virtual universe of the game EVE Online the greatest space war in the history of the Internet was fought with over 7,500 people involved in what has been called the Bloodbath of B-R5RB. In the course of about 21 hours the level of destruction has reached levels never seen in an online game but the damages from this war are not all virtual. In fact, the cost in ISK, the virtual currency used in EVE Online, have a real equivalent whose official estimate is between $300,000 and $330,000.
