It was only a matter of time and yesterday Facebook has officially submitted to SEC, the authority that watches over U.S.A. stock market, the papers needed to declare that the company founded by Mark Zuckerberg (photo ©Guillaume Paumier) wants to go public with an IPO.

This documentation inevitably uses in almost all of its content legal language but it also contains a letter from Mark Zuckerberg in which the Facebook’s founder talks about what he considers his mission and concludes listing the principles that inspired him. Zuckerberg lists five principles for Facebook’s management: focus on impact, move fast, be bold, be open and build social value.

It’s been assumed for quite some time that Facebook’s public offer will be the richest in hi-tech history. The figures are really impressive because the company is supposed to sell shares for about $5 billion. Actually, there were rumors in recent days mentioning even twice those figures but the assessment of Facebook’s value will still grow and could reach $100 billion.

Now everyone’s wondering whether this public offer is an opportunity for many people to get rich or it will be the new peak of the bubble on hi-tech companies? In short, can Facebook be really worth $100 billion?

Facebook is certainly the most important social network with over eight hundred million users but it’s also the most controversial with the legal battles fought by Mark Zuckerberg with the Winklevoss brothers, who accused him of stealing their idea, with his former partner Eduardo Saverin and others but also for various problems concerning the privacy of Facebook users.

Facebook has grown for years through a series of investors but to U.S.A. laws once it reaches five hundred shareholders a company must publish details of its financial performance.

Certainly in the short term this public offer will be a great success, the question remains about what will happen in the medium and long term. Last year Google launched its social network Google+, considered by some dead after a few months, is about to reach the one hundred million users threshold.

We must also see how long this bubble on Internet companies will last: the bursting of the previous bubble led to a collapse of the value or even the shut down of several companies that until that moment were worth a lot of money.

In short, if you have the opportunity to invest in Facebook’s share do it but keep your eyes open to sell them right away if things start going wrong!
