“The End is the Beginning” is the third episode of the TV show “Star Trek: Picard” and follows “Maps and Legends“. It’s available in the USA on the CBS All Access streaming platform and in many other countries on Amazon Prime Video.

Jean-Luc Picard (Patrick Stewart) turns to Raffi Musiker (Michelle Hurd), who used to be a Starfleet officer at his command, to find a starship that allows him to find answers. On the Borg cube, Soji (Isa Briones) works together with Hugh (Jonathan Del Arco) in search of information from former Romulan drones, complicated by their mental problems.

The flashbacks are once again significant at the beginning of an episode, this time to clarify some circumstances relating of Jean-Luc Picard’s resignation and his connection with Raffi Musiker. The relationship between the two is outlined without too many subtleties, even less the woman’s problems. Their familiarity is remarkable thinking that even Dr. Crusher ever addressed Picard by calling him JL.

“The End is the Beginning” is full of events that eventually bring Jean-Luc Picard to Captain Rios (Santiago Cabrera) and his starship. Rios is a quite colorful character with a backstory whose surface we just started scratching. The search for Dr. Bruce Maddox actively involved Dr. Agnes Jurati (Alison Pill) as well.

Again, the events on the Borg cube are very interesting. The return of the former drone Hugh was announced and apparently he’s became important in the research project that also involves Soji. The importance of Soji’s research is stressed when she asks Ramdha (Rebecca Wisocky) some questions and the scene is intertwined with the interrogation of the Romulan captured during the attack on Chateau Picard, given that in both cases the legendary figure of the Destroyer is mentioned.

At the end of the episode, when Picard says, “Engage!”, there’s the perception that he’s returning to space, the place where he really belongs, a fact stressed by the music from “Star Trek: The Next Generation”. The roots of the story have been planted, now we can expect that in the next episodes they’ll grow and the story goes very far away. From the ban on synthetics, which perhaps only has genetic engineering as a precedent, to everything around the legend of the Destroyer, the story starts goint toward a certain direction.
